The Brookings-Harbor Oktoberfest celebration has been in full swing

since Wednesday, with special movies at the Redwood Theater, crafts for

children at the Chetco Community Library, a concert at Trinity Lutheran

Church, and other activities, but today (Oct. 9) is the frosting on the

cake - the wedding.

Beginning at 11 a.m. at the Azalea Park bandshell, there will be

musical entertainment and the introductions of the wedding participants,

including the royal family and the bride and groom, Prinz Ludwig and

Prinzess Therese, followed at noon by the wedding ceremony, in the

Capella by the Sea.

Capacity in the Capella is limited, and only the fortunate 40 ticket holders will be able to be seated inside. However, many without tickets may watch the ceremony from outside through the Capella's large windows.

Elegantly costumed participants will include the bride, Prinzess Therese von Saxon-Hildburghausen, portrayed by Cherie Andrews, and the groom, Prinz Ludwig von Bayern, played by Bryan Skidmore.

Playing the parts of King Maximillian and Queen Augusta of Bavaria, parents of the groom, will be Michael Fox and Victoria Weller.

Parents of the bride, Duke Frederick and Duchess Charlotte, will be played by Paul and Moira Fossum. Patrick Dodgen will be the marrying monk.

The original Oktoberfest celebration occurred in Munich on Oct. 12, 1810, for public commemoration of the marriage that took place five days before. It has continued to be an important event in Germany through the years, with an estimated 8,000 traditionally-costumed participants, mostly from Bavaria, walking through the city center.

Following the wedding in the Capella, the royal family, costumed in their wedding attire, will proceed to the Art Walk Alley Oktoberfest Biergarten, in a procession coordinated by Moira Fossum.

At the Biergarten, traditional German food will be available, provided by Gary Saks of Honeybear Campground.

Don Meier will be in charge of games, and Karen Warwick's oompah band will provide music and atmosphere.

Saturday festivities, a few blocks north on Chetco Avenue, will include German wine tasting at MoVino Wine Bar from 3 to 8 p.m. and beer tasting at Pine Cone Tavern from 3 to 11 p.m.
