GOLD BEACH andndash; Following last year's showdown, when Jessica Goergen accepted a second-place finish, this year she won the first-place trophy during the Curry County Fair talent contest.

Last year's competition was so close, the judges requested the top two competitors return to the stage to perform their songs a second time. Goergen was narrowly defeated for the top spot.

However, this year, Goergen, 20, will represent Curry County in the adult division at the Oregon State Fair in Salem on Labor Day weekend.

Goergen performed "Let 'Er Rip" by the Dixie Chicks on the Event Center on the Beach stage Saturday afternoon.

Also winning a first place was Shantisha Bailey for her performance of "My Redeemer Lives." Her first-place win was in the youth division (ages 10-17).

Bailey is a veteran competitor at the Oregon State Fair. In 2008, she also won a first place at the Curry County Fair, earning her a spot in the Salem competition. At that time she competed in the children's division (9 and younger).

Both the adult and youth division winners received a trophy and a $500 cash prize.

This year's children's division winner was a duet, Alexa Bond and Frances Farr. The girls performed "Firefly." The duo received a trophy and a $300 cash prize.

Trophies were also given to second- and third-place winners in the three divisions.

In the adult division, second place was awarded to Megan Walters and third place to Erick Gothard.

In the youth division, second place was awarded to Erika Doyle and third place to Heidi Moore.

Winning second place in the children's division was Maya Perinich.

All eight winners were from Brookings, which sent 11 competitors to the fair. The remaining six were from Gold Beach, Port Orford and Sixes.
