Anchored to my Heart

By Bill Schlichting / The Curry Coastal Pilot

It took nearly three years of fundraising. It was the event many

looked forward to and will remember for years to come. It was the dance

of the year. It was the junior-class prom.

The theme for this years prom was "Anchored to My Heart."

About 170 Brookings-Harbor High School students dressed in their

fanciest outfits for Saturday night's event at the Brookings Elks

Lodge. A few students were seen around town before the prom began. It

was a night where couples went to the finest restaurants in the area.

As couples and singles entered the lodge, among the first things that took place after they checked their jackets was to vote for the prom king and queen. Students had a choice between senior court members Owen Fairchild, Jacob Eszlinger, Chris Haglund and Austin Yaley for king, and Amanda Horel, Kelly Aldrich, Hillary McKinney and K'la Kennedy for queen. Yaley and Aldrich won the titles.

There also was a junior court. They were Jillian McCool, Nicole Watterson, Jenna Flowers, Chris Bishop, John Blozinksi and Derrick Christie.

Those attending the prom then stepped onto dance floor, lighted only by dancing strobes flashing in every direction. The students danced to a variety of music provided by One Time Entertainment of Crescent City, Calif. There was hip-hop dancing, slow dancing and every kind in between.

Some attending the event made themselves comfortable at table seating along the walls as they sipped bottled water and punch.

And what is a prom without having something to remember it by? Nearly everyone attending had their photo taken by Deanna Leigh Photography of Brookings.

After nearly two hours of dancing and socializing, the voting for king and queen came to a close and the votes were counted. The music stopped and the dance floor quieted to a hush as the court was introduced. The silence was broken when the crowns were placed on the royalty.

The three-hour event took three days to prepare and take down. According to junior class advisor Hannah Young, the students took all day Friday and Saturday decorating the lodge. Sunday was spent taking everything down.
