Second Saturday Art Walk

The monthly Second Saturday Art Walk celebrated its fifth birthday with a Rally in the Alley on the evening of June 13.

The monthly event was first held in June 2004. It was organized mainly by artists Horst Wolf and Dale Wells who planned the event to promote art galleries and artists in the Brookings area.

At that time, the art walk, which was held from 4 to 7 p.m. as it is today, had four venues andndash;Manley Art Center, Brian Scott Gallery, Words and Pictures and Chetco Community Public Library andndash; and Wolf said people could walk between all of the galleries in seven minutes.

Although the event has grown four-fold, it still has the same organization andndash; special events, music and food. What has been added since its inception is the naming of the Art Walk Alley, the alley that parallels Chetco Avenue and Spruce Streets between Oak and Willow streets.

The alley has become the focal point of art walk events, even though the venues have expanded to include those throughout Brookings-Harbor.

The art walk has been held every month since it began, with the exception of December 2004. Art walk organizers see the last event andndash; the 60th andndash; as only the beginning.
