GREENFIELD PLEADS GUILTY TO ATTEMPTED MURDER

A Brookings man accused of shooting Chetco Avenue merchant Duane Zeckman pleaded guilty Tuesday to first-degree assault and attempted murder, officials said.

James Greenfield, 18, was accused of shooting Zeckman during a May 17 attempted robbery of Duanes Radio and T.V. in the Northgate Shopping Center.

Zeckman, 68, was shot once in his lower back, but was able to call police. Police arrived within two minutes and a Cal -Ore Life Flight ambulance a few minutes later. Police said Greenfield was still in the store when officers arrived and was arrested.

Zeckman underwent surgery at Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City, where he stayed for five days before returning to his store.

Im very cautious now. I keep looking behind my back to see whats there, Zeckman said Tuesday. He has operated his store for 30 years.

Greenfield is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 2. He could receive a minimum of 15 years, said Stacy Randolph, victims assistant coordinator.

He was represented by Jeremiah Scannell of Coos Bay.
