Neighbors and parents of Upper Chetco School students concerned about the nearby dumping of treated sewage are expected to attend a Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) meeting scheduled tonight (April 11) at the Chetco Community Public Library.

The concerns focus on dumping of treated sewage sludge from the citys sewage plant near the school and some homes.

The first part of the meeting from 6 to 7 p.m. will allow the public to ask questions of representative Paul Kennedy from the Roseburg office of DEQ.

A formal hearing is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Time allowed for each participant will depend on the number of participants, Kennedy said.

We will review the waste water treatment facility, and solid waste treatment and storage and conveyance and application rates, he said.

The application of sludge at the Upper Chetco site will be only one of several issues discussed at the meeting.

Whether solid waste is being used in the most beneficial way and managed for the best treatment of crops, plus land applications sites, and record-keeping will also be discussed at the hearing.
