YARD WASTE DROP OFF WEEK STARTS TUESDAY

This weekend is the perfect opportunity for South Coast residents to do yard work they have put off and take advantage of Curry Transfer andamp; Recyclings annual spring Drop Off Week.

The free drop off begins Tuesday at the Wridge Creek Transfer Site nine miles north of Brookings. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For five days through Saturday, May 5, CTR will accept yard debris, grass clippings, brush, leaves, and pruned limbs at no charge, along with metal objects that may have taken over a corner of the garage.

This is something we try to do every year, said CTR manager Pete Smart, and sometimes twice a year, spring and fall. We try to do our part to kind of spruce up the community.

Because of state environmental regulations, Smart said CTR has been more limited in recent years in what it can accept during Drop Off Week because of the companys mandated recycling commitments.

Theres a law that says we have to recycle a certain percentage of everything we take in, Smart said. If we dont do a certain amount we can be fined by the state.

But he says CTR workers during this time make a point of trying to salvage recyclables, and that some environmentally sensitive items which must be salvaged may be dropped off only with payment of a fee.

Those items include refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners. CTR charges $21.05 for appliances with freon and $8.50 for those without.

Also during this week, the transfer site will be accepting automobiles at a 10 percent discount.

The discounted fees are $121.50 for cars with tires and $93.50 for those without.

Smart said Drop Off Week is CTRs way of taking part in a broader effort by the City of Brookings and others on the South Coast to help get the area looking its best heading into summer.

Its mainly things that go to the landfill and things people get when they take care of their yards, he said.
