HABITAT FOR HUMANITY GROUP RAISES $6,600

By MARGE WOODFIN

Approximately 90 people dined and placed bids on numerous items during Curry County Habitat for Humanitys first major fundraiser Saturday at the Brookings Elks Club.

The auction and dinner raised $6,600, and the group hopes to net about $5,000 from the event, said president Phil Heiss.

A silent auction began the affair at 6:30 p.m. and continued until about 8 p.m., followed by a bidding auction run by auctioneer Hank Potter.

Potter, a former Brookings resident, came from Medford to volunteer his services for the auction.

In addition to the dinner and auction, the guests were entertained by keyboard artist/vocalist Virginia Riddle and Brookings-Harbor High School Sea Breeze musical group.

We learned a lot from it, so we hope the next one is even better, vice-president Barbara Ratliff said about the event.

The Curry County group was recently chartered by Habitat for Humanity International, which is in its 25th year.

The international group, which was founded by Millard and Linda Fuller, is probably best known because of the involvement of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife.

In addition to providing publicity and funding for the housing ministry, the Carters also pounded nails and worked to help build a number of houses over the years.

A stated vision of Habitat for Humanity is, a world without shacks, and the group has built houses to shelter more than 350,000 people.

Homes are built and sold at cost with no-interest loans to families who work on the building to provide sweat equity.

Heiss said the Curry County group is looking for lots on which to build, and is currently working with Gold Beach High School.

A piece of property in Gold Beach may be donated to the group soon on which it may build the first Curry County home, Heiss said.

As the group works toward finding lots and funding building materials, it is offering to help anyone in need with painting and minor repairs, Ratliff said.
