ANIMAL SHELTER NEARING COMPLETION, OPENING IN JANUARY

The Humane Society shelter for animals on Railroad Avenue is nearing completion.

Work crews had to demolish an old building at the site Thursday to make room for the shelters parking lot.

The new shelter will feature a front office and room for about 25 dogs. Each dog kennel is equipped with heat wires underneath the floor to keep the dogs warm.

The kennels have two sides with a door connecting each room so the dogs can be moved to one side while the other is being cleaned.

Humane Society Executive Director Gary Johnson said all the kennels are indoors, but there will be a dog run outside.

He said eventually they plan to make an agility course that volunteers can take the dogs through for exercise.

There will be a separate cat room, which features a kitten room with a large window facing the office area. Patrons will be able to view the kittens as they play in their own separate room.

Doggie paw prints on the floor will lead visitors to the dog viewing kennels, and kitty paw prints will lead the way to the cats.

Johnson said the shelter will have a chain link party in January, and volunteers will be invited to help put up the chain link fence out back.

It will be fun, said Johnson. Well have some food for the volunteers and the fence is all pre-fab, so we just have to bolt it up.

Theres still a lot to do. The plumbing is now being installed, and we still have to paint.

Johnson said the earliest the shelter is expected to open is Jan. 15 or 16.
