The line of people waiting to buy books at the Friends of the Library Book Sale backed up into the parking lot Thursday evening.

The opening day of the four-day Azalea Festival event at the Chetco Community Public Library was a rousing success. As soon as the doors opened at 5:30 p.m., people spilled in with boxes and plastic bags, snapping up volumes like hungry book worms.

andquot;It went very well,andquot; said andquot;Friendsandquot; member Coo Clarkson. andquot;We're delighted so far.andquot;

Clarkson said volunteers had been preparing for the event since last Monday. When asked how many books were on sale, she heaved a heavy sigh and said, andquot;At this point I'd say about four million!andquot;

The prices are 25 cents for paperbacks and 50 cents for hardbacks. Newer books in quality condition are $1 for paperbacks and $2 for hardbacks.

According to Clarkson, the sale pulled in $2,000 the first day.

andquot;That's a a lot of books for that price,andquot; she said. andquot;It was absolutely incredible. We want to thank the community for their support.andquot;

The sale continues through this weekend from 10 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. today (May 25) and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.
