More than 500 moved shoulder-to-shoulder through halls and doorways - for free health screenings, assessments, handouts, giveaways and raffled prizes - when Curry General Hospital hosted its health fair.
The fair was part of the Coos-Curry Electric Cooperative annual meeting Saturday in Brookings-Harbor High School.
The health fair theme was andquot;Get Worked Up!andquot; celebrating wellness, fitness and good health.
People were able to check their cholesterol, blood pressure, blood oxygen, body composition and take a grueling test to determine how in shape they are compared to a survey of 60-year-olds.
After the workout, people were also given tips on relaxation techniques by Laurie Johnson of the Club Center on Railroad Street. She gave a talk and demonstration on tai chi.
For added excitement, a police dog demonstration showed how Brookings K-9 officer Robbie can take a bite out of crime. Officer John McKinney acted as the criminal while Robbie's handler, Officer Donny Dotson, gave the Belgian shepherd the command to attack. He also gave a demonstration where the dog will bark and keep the criminal at bay.
Following the demonstration, McKinney, a dog trainer, and Dotson answered questions.
Azalea Middle School coach JoAnn VanDerschaaf won the hospital's andquot;Cadillac of treadmills, andquot; in a second-round drawing after the original winner turned it down. The first ticket belonged to Louise Sabin of Gold Beach. Dennis Handy of Gold Beach donated the treadmill to the hospital.
The hospital also gave away more than 300 new digital thermometers in return for old mercury ones - some of which appeared to be antiques, according to organizers. Oregon Health Sciences University contributed the digital thermometers for the event.
