RAISING FUNDS FOR LARRY

Pilot story and photos

by Bill Schlichting

The sun may not have come out Saturday, but the generosity of the community brought warmth to the heart of Larry Nichols, owner of Scampi's Fish Wagon.

Nichols, who has no health insurance, has been battling cancer. People have described him as a giving person, therefore the community has come to his assistance.

A car wash, bake sale, auction and barbecue at the Port of Brookings Harbor boardwalk raised $8,055 to help pay the cost of Nichols' cancer treatments.

Nichols attended the event. He accepted the invitation to speak on stage where the told the crowd, andquot;What an honor.andquot;

He said it was his hope that the generous people in the community will not only come through for him, but for others in is situation as well.

Most people attending were wearing jackets or sweaters. Nichols, wearing a shirt, said he was feeling warm because of his radiation treatments. He proceeded to show the crowd his radiation burns.

Nichols announced that he has completed radiation treatments and he will soon begin chemotherapy.

andquot;God bless everyone for showing up and being here,andquot; Nichols said in conclusion.

Community merchants helped make the event a success. According to Nita Rolfe, marketing director for the Port of Brookings Harbor, Fely's Cafe donated the beef ribs, hot dogs and buns. Hungry Clam donated the coleslaw. Candamp;K Markets and Price 'N Pride donated odds and ends, such as paper plates and other needed items.

Don Williams was on hand preparing and selling his dry rub Texas-style pork ribs. A friend of Nichols, he also was contributing to the cause.

At the bake sale, people had a chance to try homemade almond roca, the creation of Larry's wife, Kimberly Nichols.

andquot;So many people came together and supported us,andquot; Rolfe said.
