Sea Breeze, the Brookings-Harbor High School jazz ensemble, came home from the 30th annual Pleasant Hill Jazz Festival with two first place trophies.

At Saturday's competition, the choir won first place in the small school, individual microphone division. Choir member Jessica Goergen also received a first-place trophy in the vocal solo competition.

A total of 30 schools from throughout Oregon competed. Five choirs were in the same division as Brookings-Harbor. Goergen, a freshman, competed against 16 other soloists, mostly juniors and seniors, said Jerry Moffit, vocal music instructor.

In the preliminary round, the choir sang andquot;Watermelon Manandquot;; andquot;Bein' Green,andquot; a Kermit the Frog song; and andquot;Take the 'A' Train.andquot;

A rule states that if a choir makes it into the final round, they may sing one of the songs from the prelimaries but, in addition, must perform a new song, Moffit said.

In the final competition, the choir repeated andquot;Take the 'A' Train,andquot; and added andquot;I Wish You Love.andquot;

After each performance, the two judges worked with each school to give them singing and stage presentation tips.

andquot;When the judges came up to work with the choir, one said, 'Boy, you've got a great rhythm section,' andquot; Moffit said. The Sea Breeze rhythm section consists of Sam Brown on drums, Alyssa McClelland-Bane on bass and Diana Hall on piano.

When the choir arrived for the competition, they had the opportunity to listen to two groups. Moffit said his group thought the choirs on stage were boring. This may have caused the Brookings-Harbor singers to be more motivated when it was their turn.

andquot;I was very proud of the way they performed,andquot; Moffit said. andquot;They kicked it up from their performance at the concert (here in Brookings).

andquot;They went over their head and rose above what they usually do.andquot;

Goergen sang andquot;I Don't Know Whyandquot; and andquot;Fly Me to the Moon.andquot; She was accompanied on piano by Moffit.

Following her performance, the judges worked with Goergen on stage presentation.

Last year, Goergen also won first place in a solo competition as an eighth grader at a middle school festival.

Sea Breeze will perform at a spring concert with other high school choirs in the near future. The date will be announced.

The jazz group itself will perform its annual Sea Breeze Revue on Wednesday and Thursday nights, May 25 and 26, at Chetco Playhouse. Advance ticket sales will be announced.
