A PRESSING ENGAGEMENT

by Marjorie Woodfin

The presses were squeezing the apples and the juice was flowing Sunday, Oct. 12 at the Chetco Valley Historical Society Museum.

There were lines of hopeful apple juice drinkers at both presses, the automatic press on the back of Glenn Garvin's truck and the hand-driven press that required heavy turning.

Fathers and sons Pat and Cameron McVay and Ron and James Gable, plus Bruce Wales, were hard at work on that hand press from 1 to 4 p.m.

Pat McVay admitted that there were a lot of sore arms and shoulders by 4 p.m., but it was worth it.

The afternoon pressing provided approximately 150 gallons of apple juice for more that 25 happy families.

The apple pressing is an event that reminds many of history as well as providing fresh apple juice and has been celebrated at the museum for the last 13 or 14 years.

While juice was flowing on outside, judges were carefully tasting apple pies inside the annex, preparing to announce pie baking contest winners. Taking first class award this year was Carol Crow, second place honors went to Neica Wright, third place to Kris Harris, and honorable mention to Patti Maris.

Maris, who came from Smith River, Calif., and is a member of a pioneer family, also brought additional apple creations to sell to help increase funds raised.

Patty McVay said that the approximately $550 raised from the apple pressing and pie sales will help to keep the museum open and the electricity on.

The museum is run by volunteers who try to keep the museum open on weekends from May through October, and will arrange for tours on other days.

Patty McVay said that Kalmiopsis students will again be again be decorating Christmas trees at the museum this year. andquot; It's so exciting, andquot; she said.

She said the museum has so much history and it is important to encourage young people to study the history of their ancestors.
