Five high school seniors have been selected as members of the 2009 Azalea Festival Court.

The princesses on the court will be Haley Fleshman, Kayla Hamm, Molly Moncrief, Jasmine Spurgeon, and Molly Vance.

The Azalea Scholarship Pageant Board made the selections this week from among 11 applicants. The independent nonprofit board organizes the court and operates the pageant that will select the queen of the Azalea Festival.

The five members of the court will begin weekly training in a variety of skills after the first of the year, leading up to presentations and appearances on behalf of the community.

The 2009 pageant is set for Saturday, April 25. The Azalea Festival is organized by the Brookings-Harbor Chamber of Commerce for Memorial Day weekend, May 22-25.

Molly Moncrief

Molly Moncrief is the daughter of Monty and Deborah Moncrief.

andquot;I realized how much knowledge there was to gain and what an opportunity like this could offer,andquot; Molly says in her application. andquot;The lessons and education gained from being a part of the court would truly benefit my future.andquot;

Princess Molly has a 3.8 grade point average. She has applied to Southern Oregon University, Linfield College and University of Oregon. She plans to seek a masters degree in elementary education, with a minor in art.

She is the president of the associated student body at BHHS, active in fundraising for Doernbecher Children's Hospital, holds four letters in varsity soccer, and is the winner of several art awards.

Outside of school, she works for Slugs n' Sones n' Ice Cream Cones, and was a co-teacher in art with the KASPER summer program.

Jasmine Spurgeon

Jasmine Spurgeon is the daughter of Don and Jennifer Spurgeon.

Being on the Azalea Court, she said, will be andquot;a memorable experience that gives me a chance to grow in leadership, public speaking and community service.andquot;

Spurgeon holds a 3.617 GPA, and has applied to Oregon Institute of Technology, Southern Oregon University, Point Loma Nazarene University, Northern Nazarene University and Simpson University.

At BHHS, she has been involved in student government, National Honor Society, Leo Club, yearbook, leadership, soccer and volleyball. Outside of class, she is active in several community service projects and church groups.

Princess Jennifer has been recognized by the People to People Student Ambassador Programs and invited to the Miss Oregon competition.

Spurgeon has part-time jobs with both On Your Feet shoe store and Re/Max Coast and Country Real Estate.

Kayla Hamm

Kayla Hamm is the daughter of Wanda and Gerald Hamm.

As princess, Kayla writes, andquot;I would like to be a role model to younger girls and also better myself through this experience.andquot;

Princess Kayla holds a 4.0 GPA, and has applied to Linfield College, San Francisco State University and Portland State University, planning to study music performance and composition.

At BHHS, she has been involved in jazz choir, band, drama, leadership, soccer and track. She has been selected for state and regional choirs.

Princess Kayla has a part-time job at Surfside Espresso.

Haley Fleshman

Haley Fleshman is the daughter of Donna Fleshman and Darryn Fleshman.

andquot;I have spent many years watching the Azalea Pageant, and after every pageant I would go home dreaming of what I might do if I ever got to be an Azalea princess,andquot; she said in her application. andquot;Now that I have a chance, all my dreams as a child might come true.andquot;

Haley holds a 3.913 grade point average, and will use her Azalea Pageant scholarship to pursue a degree in elementary education. She has applied to Pacific University, University of Oregon and Southern Oregon University.

The president of the senior class at Brookings-Harbor High, Princess Haley is also the manager for the boys basketball teams, a member of the Spirit Committee and co-captain of the Cave Crew.

She holds part-time jobs at Redwood Theater and Slugs 'N' Stones 'N' Ice Cream Cones, and is a teaching assistant in a kindergarten class at Kalmiopsis Elementary School.

Molly Vance

Molly Vance is the daughter of Roy Vance and Teresa Vance.

She applied for the court, she wrote, for andquot;the experience and learning that comes with it.andquot;

Vance holds a 3.68 GPA, and has applied to study at Portland State University, San Francisco State University or the Art Institute of Portland.

Princess Molly has been involved in student government, Science Club, leadership, volleyball, the Sea Breeze choir, drama and dance at BHHS.

Outside of class, she works for Dutch Bros. and for photographer Deanna Bansemer.
