Brookings dentist Dr. Kevin Hardesty is looking forward to a trip to
India in November with the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID).
Because of his expertise in implantation dentistry, Hardesty was
invited to participate in the academy's annual Indirect World Congress
three day meeting in New Delhi.
Hardesty, who will be out of his office from Nov. 18 to 26, will join
other members of AAID in India to do implant surgery and sinus grafts.
Participation is by invitation only.
He is one of a limited number of dentists who specialize in implant surgery. He explained that he believes implantation is a good choice because when teeth are lost, if the underlying bone is without function and does not receive pressure from the tooth above, it melts away.
Hardesty, who received his undergraduate degree from California State College in Sacramento, worked in research and development at Aero Jet for several years before deciding to move on to a career in dentistry.
After checking into available dental programs, Hardesty chose Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., to pursue his dental training. He said that he believes it was a good choice because the university is small enough that the dentistry program covers all aspects of dentistry, including implantation, providing an introduction to specialties without having to go elsewhere for advanced training.
"It was a complete experience, with exposure to root canals and implants and other specialties," he said.
Several years ago, Hardesty participated in a program at Oregon Health Science University in Portland where there has been extensive progress in implant surgeries.
"I have been very fortunate," Hardesty said. "There is a limited number of residencies in implantation, maybe five or six in the world."
In 1996 Hardesty moved his practice to Curry County when a friend told him, "We need a dentist in the area." He first opened an office in Port Orford, which he still maintains. He said that he keeps a hygienist on duty and is there himself once or twice a month.
Hardesty, who has already spent 300 hours participating in implantation work and training, indicated that he believes the trip to India will be an opportunity to work with leaders in the field of implantation and to be exposed to the latest improvements.
He indicated that his desire is to provide the optimum service to his dental patients for all their dental needs and that he will continue to take every opportunity to increase his skill and knowledge.
Dr. Hardesty's office is located at 307 Fern St. His telephone number is 541-412-3810.
