Dr. Brice Chang, new owner of Brookings Dental Arts, said he is delighted to be on the West Coast practicing dentistry.
"It's a fantastic place," Chang said.
Chang still sounds surprised when he explains how he landed in
Brookings. "It happened almost overnight." He said that he came to
Brookings to investigate a dental office he had been led to believe was
for sale. However, when he arrived he discovered that it was not for
sale. When he expressed his disappointment, he said someone suggested
that he contact Dr. Richard Edmiston, who might be willing to sell his

The young dentist went back to Vancouver, Wash., packed up his bags and assumed ownership of Brookings Dental Arts, 350 Pacific Ave., on Sept 19.
He immediately ordered new, state-of-the-art equipment that he said can produce three-dimensional X-rays that even provide accurate bone density measurement that can help to quickly determine appropriate treatment.
The 40-year-old dentist came with his parents to the United States from Korea when he was 19 years old. He worked for his uncle in his wig and clothing business in Buffalo, N.Y., to earn money for college tuition.
When he was ready to continue his education he said he went to Iowa because he wanted to get out of the Buffalo snow. "I didn't know anything about the weather in Iowa" he said.
Chang received his undergraduate and dentistry degrees from University of Iowa.
He also has Fellowship Status in Academy of General Dentistry and Fellowship and Mastership in International Congress of Oral Implantologists.
After his seven years in Iowa, he came to Oregon to visit an aunt in Lincoln City and fell in love with the West Coast because of the mountains and the ocean.
He currently works Tuesday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Their home has not yet sold and his wife and three sons remain in Vancouver.
When asked how he met his wife, he said, "We were set up." He explained, "My mom's best friend is her aunt." His parents moved back to Korea and he met his future wife while visiting his parents. The courtship was conducted over the Internet, and they were married in Korea.
Chang said he is surprised by the diversity he has found in the Brookings population. "It's a great city and it's good to be here," he said. He said he is looking forward to having his wife Hwo and sons, Hansel, Bryson, and Leo join him as soon as possible. They plan to spend Christmas together in Brookings.
He looks forward to getting better acquainted in the community and is happy to show off his new equipment to visitors.
