Snyder brings Mayflower to Brookings

Marge Woodfin, Pilot staff writer

Brookings entrepreneur Robert Snyder, who has had more than 12 years

experience in the moving business, took on the biggest rig of his life

on Nov. 1 andndash; a 53-foot Mayflower moving van.

"It can hold up to four households full of goods," Snyder said as he showed off his newest equipment earlier this week.

Snyder is the Mayflower agent/local service administrator in Curry

County, in association with Olsen and Fielding Moving Service.

Snyder is excited about being part of the Mayflower chain that has 700 trucks and 300 agents, and can move household goods of any size, worldwide.

Another plus to be part of the Mayflower fleet is the advantage of having available loads for the trip back, which wasn't always possible when he was owner-manger-driver of his own Express Moving Co.

"Mayflower also provides a claims manager and a moving coordinator, and handles all customer service and billing," Snyder explained.

About his big new rig he said, "It's longer, higher, and wider than anything I have driven before."

However, its size also means that, in many cases, because of narrow and unpaved streets in Curry County, he will often pick up household goods in a smaller truck and transfer the furniture and additional items to the big rig for cross country moves.

"The Mayflower truck is more difficult to drive here than on the freeways across country," he explained.

With access to worldwide moving, Mayflower has a military contract with the U.S. Coast Guard and other military services.

"Basically, we do everything," Snyder declared.
