Emmie Yeiter, a 2008 graduate of Gold Beach High School, is preparing
for a summer internship with College Works Painting, a company that
trains college students to run their own summer business painting
The internship work experience is aimed at helping to prepare interns with experience that will help them understand successful business practices, as well as pay for a college education. "I hope to earn enough to get through school," said Yeiter, who is currently a pre-med chemistry major at Oregon State University.
One of her first efforts to get her summer business moving was participating in the Brookings-Harbor Home Show last month, with a raffle offering coupons for 20-percent off on house painting. She said she picked up 55 prospects at the Home Show.
Yeiter was back in Brookings Saturday, April 4, to follow up on some of those prospects and had two signed orders and a check attached to her clipboard by 5:30 p.m.
"I was hired in late October, and had a few training sessions," she said. "By February I started getting bookings for my summer." She said she will be providing the painting services from mid-June until early September.
College Works Painting, with headquarters in Irvine, Calif., has been offering summer internships to college students for 17 years. Working under College Works Painting, Yeiter can offer two-year or five- year guarantees and is fully licensed and bonded with $1 million liability insurance and workmen's compensation.
Yeiter learned about College Works from Brookings-Harbor High School graduate Jason Bay, who arranged painting for 35 homeowners last year. This year Bay is a regional manager for College Works.
Yeiter said she will not be doing much of the painting herself, but will serve as a district manager, doing the walk-throughs, preparing estimates, purchasing paint and supplies, and hiring the painters.
She believes that the entrepreneurial experience will help her set up her medical practice one day after she completes her education and residency and obtains her license to practice medicine as a pediatrician.
