Brookings Community Helpers Inc. Food Share recently received
approximately 300 pounds of food from Dutch Bros. Coffee owner Ty
The food was donated by Dutch Bros customers who took advantage of Thompson's offer of a free drink for any customer who brought in three cans of food to Dutch Bros. in Brookings or Harbor on Valentine's Day.
It was a Valentine's Day gift to Dutch Bros. customers, plus an opportunity to make a contribution to the community efforts to feed the hungry.
The food was delivered at an opportune time, a very busy day when many clients were requesting food. A small note to volunteers asked that they only provide enough food for three to five days in boxes currently being distributed because demand exceeded donations during the previous month.
Others must have realized the current greater need because just after the note was read, a woman walked in with a check for $1,000, another example of the generosity of the Brookings-Harbor community.
It was heartwarming to observe the kindness and respect the volunteers conveyed to their clients as they filled the boxes with food selected by the recipient. The food bank obviously continues to operate on the declaration by organizers more than 20 years ago, "nobody should go hungry."
The food bank, 522 Hemlock St., is open from 9 a.m. to noon, Tuesday through Friday.
