The new program assistant at the Brookings campus of Southwestern Oregon Community College is Aleta Mankamyer.
Mankamyer replaced Linda Brown on June 1. Brown took a job with the Port of Brookings Harbor.
The program assistant puts out the quarterly schedule for the campus. Mankamyer works with the instructors, the college and the high school to schedule who goes where when.
She said the hardest part is figuring out where to put everyone. She said she is already working on the fall schedule.
Mankamyer also writes press releases and, like everyone else at the campus office, answers phones.
She said summer classes began this week, including college level transfer classes. The summer quarter lasts eight weeks.
She said on-line classes are popular because students can choose their own hours to learn.
A lot of people like it because you can work at your own pace, she said.
Mankamyer said most students at the campus work and attend college part time.
Our challenge is to meet their needs, she said.
Special interest classes will include repairing and upgrading computers, and web page upgrades.
A rehearsal and performance class for theater arts will be offered for credit, or just for fun.
The college also holds one-day special interest classes like weaving.
Mankamyer said she is working to put a certified nursing assistant class together for the summer.
Thats the hard part, she said, And thats what I do.
Mankamyer joined the college staff after five years at The Pilot, where she worked her way from a darkroom assistant to digital imaging technician.
You need a change every once in a while, she said of her new job.
Im enjoying it, she said, It has new challenges. Its different.
