Sue Carroll and Vanessa Keys believe they have found the right mix for running a preschool and child care center.
Carroll has worked as a physical therapist for the past 15 years, including at Coastal Physical Therapy. Her interest is in early childhood development.
Keys has a degree in early childhood education and was director of a preschool in Burns. She came to Brookings after her husband, Jim Keys, got a teaching job here.
Together, they have opened Great Beginnings Preschool and Child Care at 15940 Oceanview Drive.
When they decided to go into business, they found the house and soon they were painting and remodeling the building to make it for children, Carroll said.
This is the only certified place where the entire building is dedicated to children, Carroll said.
The interior of the building is designed for visibility into all rooms. On the outside, the playground is fenced and the parking lot has a circular driveway for access.
Fruit trees, bushes and a garden were planted, Keys said. The children enjoy caring for the plants, especially watering them.
They received their certification in March. Keys said they are certified to take care of up to 20 children.
Keys and Carroll said they offer everything. They get help from high school students who help teach the children foreign languages, including Spanish and French, Keys said.
We offer hands on learning, Keys said. Children learn through play.
Keys said the center offers a curriculum-based education along with development of motor skills with the help of Carroll.
Activities are team based, Carroll said. Field trips are offered, too.
Breakfast, lunch and snacks are served at tables to teach manners, Carroll said.
Parents are invited to drop by anytime to see how their children are doing. We have an open door policy, Keys said.
Great Beginnings accepts children from age 2 1/2 through school age.
Services are offered between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. For information, call (541) 412-3443.
