Long-time coastal resident Joel Walter, a 22-year veteran of the telecommunications industry, has been named local manager for Verizon (formerly GTE) in Curry and Josephine counties and Bandon.
The job is based in Brookings.
Walter supervises a team of technicians responsible for installation, repair and maintenance of Verizons residential and single-line business service in Bandon, Brookings-Harbor, Gold Beach, Port Orford, Langlois, Murphy/Provolt and surrounding areas.
Verizon has more than 23,000 customer lines in his assigned territory, company officials said. He also serves as a local contact for customer service issues and represents Verizon in community activities.
He succeeds Bob Hunter, who accepted a new job with Verizon based in Coos Bay earlier this year.
Walter joined the company in Coos Bay in 1978 but has spent nearly all of his telecommunications career in Curry and Del Norte counties. His background includes jobs in Crescent City and Brookings in supply, installation and repair, and business services.
Before taking his current position, he was a special services technician in Crescent City, Brookings and Gold Beach starting in 1991.
We are fortunate to be able to bring in a person of Joels caliber, said Jim McFarland, Verizons operations manager for the South Coast and Del Norte County. He has a valuable blend of technical expertise, knowledge of the area and our customers, communications skills, energy and can-do spirit.
Walter said he is pleased to provide a local point of contact for Verizon customers needing assistance. He can be reached at (541) 469-0988. One of his primary goals is to help bring additional advanced services to his areas of responsibility.
