NATURAL FOODS STORE AWARDED 'SEAL OF AUTHORITY'

A new piece of equipment about the size of a laptop computer already is saving money and keeping mold and bacteria at bay in the Brookings Natural Foods Co-op (BNFC).

The store, at 630 Fleet St., has been awarded the AiroCide PPT andquot;Seal of Authorityandquot; certification for providing advanced air quality protection in its facility.

Between January, when it was installed, and February, the equipment saved $50 in produce spoilage and no one on the staff of four has been been ill, according to Joyce Tromblee, general manager.

As a cooperative, the store is technically owned by its 150 members.

AiroCide PPT is a NASA-developed technology that kills airborne mold and bacteria and removes ethylene gas without using chemicals, ozone or oxygen ions. Only clean fresh air is released after being treated.

BNFC was awarded the certification because of its efforts to offer superior products that last longer and stay fresher using environmentally friendly, energy-efficient technology.

The store is open Mondays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
