A combination of dentistry, real estate and catalog sales might seem like an unlikely career, but Brookings dentist. Gerrid Joy has been quite successful with that combination.
Joy, who is currently in the last stages of a major remodel of the Northgate building at the north end of Brookings, is not a newcomer to building projects. The Northgate is the fourth Brookings building Joy has renovated.
Other buildings he has overhauled include the former gas station where Beckley Company Real Estate is currently located, the building where Signatures Gallery is located, and the building currently housing Bella Italia and Rancho Viejo restaurants.
Joy, who has been in the area for 38 years, has been able to combine dentistry and real estate, buying, selling and remodeling, plus a stint in catalog sales.
He began his dentistry practice 50 years ago in Newport Beach, Calif., as the youngest 1958 graduate of the College of Dentistry at the University of Southern California.
In 1970, while practicing dentistry in Smith River, Joy purchased Salmon Harbor Resort, where he practiced dentistry for 15 years until he purchased the JC Penney Catalog Store, combining the catalog business with real estate sales, until he moved into his next building which currently houses the Beckley Real Estate office.
While inspecting his newest project, he was asked what drives him to take these renovations. He responded, andquot;I enjoy beautifying the community.andquot; He noted that he started his facade improvement a little to late to take advantage of urban renewal funds that had run out.
He is again combining two separate careers, practicing dentistry at Pelican Bay Prison, while renovating the property he purchased in February.
The Northgate building tenants, Hagen's Dry Cleaners, Wildbird Backyard, In-Motion Graphics, the Solar Place, and Maria's Bubbles and Bows dog grooming salon, plus new tenants preparing to move into the bakery shop, are all looking forward to completion of Joy's project.
Joy said he also has two additional small shops available for lease in the building.
This week Sylvia Baker, who owns Hagen's Dry Cleaners with her husband Mark, inspected the exterior improvements.
andquot;I've been waiting 48 years for this and now, when I'm about ready to retire, ?andquot; she said.
Maria Kaufman, owner of Maria's Bubbles and Bows pet grooming shop said, andquot;I love it, I think it's beautiful.andquot;
Kaufman, who has been doing dog grooming for 30 years said, andquot;I'm already busy, but I'm sure it will bring more people here. I've gotta' get my place fixed up.andquot;
Two newer tenants, Jack and Merri Cook, owners of Wildbird Backyard, and Brett Dreson of In-Motion Graphics, expressed appreciation for Joy's beautification project as they inspected the exterior and prepared to install appropriate new signage.
