In their final league dual meet of the year, the Brookings-Harbor High School wrestling team destroyed the Sutherlin Bulldogs with a 62-24 victory Thursday evening in Sutherlin.
"It went pretty well and the kids did good," Coach Dave Freeman said. "Now we're just getting ready for districts."
The district meet begins at 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8 at Siuslaw High School in Florence and picks up on Saturday, Feb. 9 at noon.
In order to qualify for the state wrestling tournament, a wrestler must place in the top three in their weight class.
On Thursday, the Bruins won eight of their 10 matches on the night to go along with a pair of forfeits.
The Bruins' Willie Bennett (140) and Mike Klein (275) received forfeits while both teams forfeited at 103 and 135 pounds.
At 112 pounds, Aaron Miller only held a slight 5-4 advantage over Josh Pugh after the first period, but started off the second period with a quick takedown and then pinned him in 2:46.
Ray Mazyck outscored Dillon Stromberg in each of the three periods as he cruised to a 13-4 majority decision in the 119-pound division.
In the 125-pound weight class, the Bruins' Daniel Demerjian racked up 10 points in the second period before he pinned Mark Aguirre in 3:46.
Demerjian also went 2-0 in the JV bracket at the Cottage Grove Invitational last weekend in his first tournament of the year.
At 130 pounds, Brock Bristow battled with Jeff Pugh for two periods before he was taken down and pinned at the 4:50 mark of the final period.
In the 145-pound division, Daniel Grubb recorded the only first-round pin of the night as he downed Austin Powell in just 1:15.
Cody Miller wrestled a very tough match in the 152-pound weight class as edged out a 4-0 decision over Jake Gilman, last year's district champion at 152 pounds.
Miller used a first period takedown to take a 2-0 lead that held up through a scoreless second period.
In the third period, Miller started the round on the bottom, reversed Gilman and managed to hold him down for the rest of the period to secure the 4-0 victory.
At 160 pounds, Evan Peterson led Adam Guffie 2-0 after the first period, but Peterson got caught early in the second period and pinned in 2:30.
Denny Davis used five takedowns throughout his match to roll to a dominant 15-2 majority decision over Dan Jobe at 171 pounds.
In the 189-pound weight class, Cody Brooks was able to use an escape late in the third period to grab a 6-5 win over Jim Henry.
Brooks led the contest 4-3 after two periods and used an immediate escape at the start of the third period to take a two-point lead.
Henry then tied up the match with a takedown, but Brooks was able to scramble back to his feet to secure the one-point victory.
In the final match of the dual meet, Mike Althof proved to be the superior wrestler on his feet as he took down and pinned Dillon McKinney in 3:40 of their 215-pound bout.
With the dual meet win, the Bruins improved to 2-3 in Far West League duals.
