The Brookings-Harbor High School boys soccer team took a commanding lead in the Far West League standings with a 5-0 victory over the South Umpqua Lancers on Tuesday. Senior Thomas Spratt put the first three goals in the net for the Bruins, the first with 27 minutes remaining in the first half. The second and third goals came with 28:45 and 23:33 minutes remaining in the second half.
The first goal came on a free kick that cleared the Lancer wall and hit the upper corner. The other two came as Spratt wove his way between defenders and shot. Alan Anaya took a pass from Nels Johnson and scored with 18:43 minutes remaining in the second half to put the Bruins up by four. The fifth and final score for the Bruins came with 18:19 remaining as Wyatt Aldrich gathered in the pass from Fernando Villa and scored. According to assistant coach Peter Spratt, the Bruins are seeing improvement in every game. “The intensity level was higher this time,” he said. “We were at full strength because nobody was sick.” Two additions to the Bruin team, brothers John and David Joyce, saw playing time in their first Bruin game. “They both contributed to the victory,” Spratt said. The Lancers had been averaging five and a half goals per game prior to their meeting with the Bruins and were shut out for the first time this season. The Bruins had 28 shots on goal and only allowed six by the Lancers. “With 28 shots on goal, you could see we were just a little bit off,” Spratt said. “Those kids worked hard to get position and then just barely missed the shots.” The Bruins are on the road again on Thursday as they travel to take on the Pirates of Pacific High School just outside of Langlois. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. |
