Softball sweeps South Umpqua to keep playoffs dreams alive

“We’re totally excited,” Head Coach Steve Bonde said of the atmosphere following the softball team’s sweep of the South Umpqua Lancers. “They didn’t even know, or at least I wasn’t making a big deal out of it.”

The Lady Bruins took the Lancers to task in game one, destroying them 8-1.

Courtney Kay pitched a complete game with four strikeouts, one walk and a 0.00 ERA.

Kayla Webre proved to be a force, hitting 4-for-5 with two runs and 3 RBIs. Megan Strain also had a hot bat, hitting .500 with one run and a RBI.

The second game took 10 innings but the Bruins accomplished what they set out to do: win 12-11.

Hannah Goergen started game two and pitched 4.2 innings before Kay came in for relief.

Halle Ostman provided much needed offense hitting 3-for-4 with three runs, 1 RBI and two walks.

“They stayed focused and played every inning, every out and every pitch,” Bonde said. “It was a great team win.”

The Bruins travel to face either Mazama or Phoenix next week in an OSAA round-of-32 play-in game.
