At least they don’t have to return a national championship title or the Heisman trophy for what they did. Of course, it might be because they’ve never won either. The Boise State University athletic department received their final sanctions on Tuesday, and lost practice days, scholarships and were cited by the NCAA Committee on Infractions for “lack of institutional control.” And it wasn’t just their football program – the violations covered multiple sports including tennis, track and field, cross country and football. As an Oregon fan, there is some vindication in this finding. I knew that there was a reason for Boise beating Oregon three years ago. They cheated. It’s not likely that these violations actually had anything to do with the victory over the Ducks, but one can hope, right?
~~~ Speaking of the Ducks, and the Bruins for that matter, I love how teams come back from losses and ravage the next team they play. The Ducks destroyed Nevada, 69-20, after losing to LSU, and the Bruins demolished Bandon, 64-15, after barely losing to Cascade Christian. In the Ducks’ case, I’m assuming they were just a little mad at themselves about the leg-whip penalties and the offsides penalties from the LSU game and wanted to prove to the nation that they still had what it takes to be ranked. In the Bruins’ case, it was simply a continuation of where they left off against Cascade Christian. They take on the Del Norte Warriors on Friday, and this game will probably prove to be their biggest challenge of the season. Personally, I think they’ll come out victorious. It will be a scrappy game, with some vicious back and forth action in the scores, but I’m picking the Bruins.
~~~ Speaking of picking the Bruins, I am currently in four fantasy football leagues and a weekly pick ’em league with my brother-in-law. The fantasy leagues are with four different groups of people and, up until this season, I was only in three. The pick ’em league was an afterthought to the fantasy league, and it is fun to try and guess who will win the NFL games each week. The problem I struggle with though, is I always pick teams that are my favorites. For instance, I will always pick Seattle to beat whoever they are playing, because Seattle is my team. I’m not blind when it comes to their talent level; I know that they aren’t likely to beat the team that I pick them against, but I’m a fan, and fans always pick their team. So, even when the Bruins are facing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, I’m going to pick the Bruins. They’re my team, and I’m a fan.
~~~ Speaking of the Seahawks losing, for those who care, I’ve lost 24 pounds in the last three weeks, simply by lowering my caloric intake, cutting sugar out of my diet, and making better choices when it comes to what I put on my plate and in my mouth. I still struggle with eating just because it is there, but as I slow down and enjoy food rather than inhale it, I should be able to better sense when I’m full.
