The competition was a chance for club wrestlers to get in some more tournament experience before the state qualifying tournament in one week.
“It was a better turnout than we had last year,” event organizer Tony Hannan said. “Its tough to get people to make the drive down her, but we’ll keep trying.
We just need to time it right and give big trophies, and keep trying to grow the tournament.”
The teams included Brookings, North Medford, Gold Beach, South Umpqua, Illinois Valley, Eagle Point, South Medford, Crater, Grants Pass, Del Norte and Marshfield.
Marshfield took home the team trophy with a score of 45. North Medford came in second with 43, and Del Norte took the third spot with a 39.
The Bruins found themselves in fifth place but the coaching staff was pleased with the way the kids wrestled.
“They wrestled pretty good,” assistant coach Evan Peterson said. “We really wanted to claim that team trophy, but we had some unfortunate losses. I think that they wrestled really well though.”
A number of Bruin wrestlers went undefeated in the tournament crab pools, but the team victory came down to numbers and the top three teams simply outnumbered the Bruins.
The Bruins will continue to practice to prepare for the upcoming state qualifying meet in Redmond on Jan. 7.
