Brookings’ basketball players Junior Nunez, Cassie Vaught and Iva Hart hit the big time in Reno, Nev., over Memorial Day weekend and brought home some hardware from the AAU Jam on It tournament.
Nunez, a fourth grader, played on the fifth-grade Warriors team which features players from Crescent City, Smith River, Hiouchi and Brookings.
The Warriors went undefeated in the tournament (4-0) and won the championship game by two points over a Union City, Calif., team.
Hart and Vaught played together on the Control Basketball Academy team with players from Salem and the Rogue Valley.
They won a semifinal game in triple overtime to make it to the finals where they lost to a team out of Davis, Calif., to finish the tournament with a 4-1 record.
According to Ramon Nunez, most of the teams competing were all-star teams out of larger metropolitan areas.
“The Brookings-Harbor kids all played very well and are putting in the work to get better,” Nunez said. “They are challenging themselves by putting in the extra time and seeking the best competition. It was very impressive what they were able to accomplish.”
