The Brookings-Harbor Lady Bruins basketball team outscored the Cottage Grove Lady Lions by 12 points in the final quarter en-route to a 67-54 victory Friday night at Cottage Grove High School.
The win earns BHHS a trip to the 4A state championships at Gill Coliseum starting this Wednesday.
It took a total team effort for the Bruins, who had four players score in double figures. Mallory McDonald led all players with 15 points, Drew Farmer scored 14 points, Iva Hart tallied 12 points, and Francesca Farr contributed 10 points in the hard fought victory.
The Lady Bruins found themselves in unfamiliar territory, down by 5 points early in the second quarter. BHHS went on a 9-0 run at that point to storm back and take the lead. Hart led the charge with 7 points in the second quarter to lead the Lady Bruins to a 32-24 halftime lead.
In the third quarter the Lady Lions roared back, outscoring the Bruins, 19-13, to make it a two-point BHHS lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter began with a McDonald jumper followed by a Farmer 3-pointer to stretch the lead to 7 points with 6:27 left.
Later, two technical fouls called on the Cottage Grove bench ensured their fate as Farmer drained the freebies, stretching the lead out to nine with a minute left.
Cottage Grove ran out of time they desparately fouled BHHS to save time on the game clock. BHHS went 13-19 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter, and were 24-34 for the game.
The Lady Bruins will play Sutherlin, the top-ranked team in 4A and the only team to beat BHHS this season, at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 12 at the Gill Coliseum on the campus of Oregon State University in Corvallis.
