A collective sigh of relief was breathed by the members of the Lady Bruins soccer team after they beat the Lady Bulldogs of Sutherlin, 2-1.
The victory means a solitary hold on second place in the Far West League and a home-field advantage for BHHS as they head into the OSAA round-of-24 play-in games.
The Lady Bruins will host a third-place team from one of seven other Oregon 4A leagues in a game that must be played before November 3.
“We don’t know yet who we’ll play, but Buell Gonzales (BHHS Athletic Director) will try and schedule the game for Saturday, Nov. 3 when the most people can be there,” Head Coach Fred Juarez said. “We’ll end up playing a top-ranked third-place team and it will be a tough game. We’ll give whoever comes to our hous a great game in front of a great home crowd.”
The Bruins’ two goals were scored by Hannah Baron, who has the distinction of being the only Bruin to score on Sutherlin this season, according to Juarez.
“She has their number,” he said. “She scored all four of our goals against them.”
Juarez also credited the Bruins’ defense with helping the team win.
“Brenna Clarke was unreal again as she shut down their top player,” he said, “and Iva Hart broke up at least five plays that would have resulted in more goals for Sutherlin and was top dog for our defense.”
