The Brookings-Harbor High School girls soccer team remains tied for first place in the Far West League after defeating the Lady Bulldogs of North Bend 4-0 on Tuesday. The game was marked by an unusually high number of yellow cards awarded by the head referee, in a very physical contest. “It was frustrating,” Bruin forward Crystal Rodriguez said of the physicality. “They were pulling my jersey and my hair, but it only made me play harder.” Rodriguez was the recipient of a yellow card after a push by one of the Lady Bulldogs initiated a retaliatory shove on Rodriguez’ part. The penalty was appropriate in that case but could have been awarded to both players. “The physicality needs to be controlled by the refs,” Head Coach Fred Juarez said of the penalties. “I thought some of the yellow cards were unnecessary, but everyone sees it from a different view.” The Lady Bruins had four players score in the shutout, Louie Deraita, Hannah Goergen, Jade Heredia and Hannah Baron. Deraita’s score came in the first half off of a pass from Rodriguez. The shot was placed perfectly, according to Juarez, and there was nothing North Bend’s goalie could do. Goergen’s goal in the opening half of the game was the result of persistence, as she followed the rebound from a shot by Deraita – whose shot came off the rebound of Baron’s first attempt. With 25 minutes remaining in the second half, Heredia was able to sprint downfield, outrunning the defender and the goalie to the ball and placing a shot in the goal. Baron’s goal with less than two minutes in the game appeared as if it would be blocked by the North Bend goalie, but it sailed past the goalie’s hands to land safely in the net. “I waited until I saw the opening and took my shot,” Baron said. “She got her hand on the ball, but I knew it would only tip it into the box. Her body wasn’t in front of it, and I knew she didn’t have a chance to get it.” Juarez was pleased with his team’s shutout performance. “We did good,” he said. “We completed a lot of the passes that we’ve been working on, and they hustled, I’m very proud of their hustle.” The Bruins lost one game and tied one game with the Bulldogs last year and, according to Juarez, “the girls wanted some redemption.” “The big thing was that everyone gave 100 percent,” he said. “We were first to every ball.” The Bruins host Coquille at 4:30 p.m., Thursday at home. |
