Lady Bruins offense stays hot in sweep of Marshfield Pirates

Game 1: Marshfield 7, BHHS 10

Brookings-Harbor High School outfielder MiMi Fernandez drove in four runs on three hits in pacing the Lady Bruins to a 10-7 win in the first game of a doubleheader against the Marshfield Pirates, Friday at BHHS.

Fernandez had plenty of help, as the Lady Bruins, who have been scoring runs at a fever pace this season, had five players with multiple hits in the game. In addition to Fernandez, Hannah Baron, Mariahn Seavello, Courtney Kay, and Alaura Marrington all had at least two hits and scored at least one run in the game.

Courtney Kay earned the win, pitching a complete game while giving up six earned runs

BHHS was able to jump out to an early 4-0 lead by scoring a run in the first and three in the second.

Marshfield was able to stay in the game via the long ball, as they tagged Kay for three home runs in the game. Pirate shortstop Katelyn Rossback homered in the top of the third inning to make it a 4-1 score. After the Lady Bruins added an insurance run in each of the following two innings, Marshfield outfielder Paige Tavernier hit another solo home run, bringing the Pirates within three runs at 5-2. The big blow came in the top of the fifth, when, after the Lady Bruins manufactured a run in the fourth inning, Pirate catcher Abby Osborne hit a two-out, three-run home run, swinging the momentum back to Marshfield and cutting the deficit to one run at 6-5.

The Lady Bruins responded quickly, as they scored three runs in the bottom half of inning, seizing any momentum the from the Pirates’ grasp, making it a 9-5 score.

Marshfield scratched across a run in the top of the sixth but once again BHHS responded. The Pirates were only able to score one run in the seventh before Kay was able to get Travernier to pop out to Seavello at second base to end the game.

Game 2: Marshfield 1, BHHS 12

The Lady Bruins offense erupted for 10 runs in the first three inning en route to a 12-1 rout over the Pirates in game two of the doubleheader.

Lady Bruins Kaitlin Saphiloff, Seavello and Marrington all had run-scoring doubles in a four-run second inning that lead BHHS to another early lead.

The Lady Bruins scored another six runs in the third on doubles by Baron and Seavello and a triple by Kay. They added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 12-1 lead.

Lady Bruin pitcher Hannah Goergen scattered six hits over five innings to earn the win. She is now 5-0 on the season with a 1.36 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 36 innings.

For the season, the Lady Bruins are batting an astonishing .441 as a team, with seven players batting over .400. They have scored 91 runs this season, an average of just over nine runs per game.

BHHS is now 9-1 overall on the season, with a 3-0 league record. They are tied for first in the Far West league with South Umpqua.
