The Brookings-Harbor High School girls basketball team dropped to 5-2 in Far West League action when they lost Friday’s game to the Vikings of Siuslaw, 23-44.

The Lady Bruins scored only 5 points in the first quarter, and 4 in the second, with lackluster shooting and tight defense on senior Brianna Juarez by Katie Thrall of the Lady Vikings.

“We were just lethargic all night. No energy whatsoever,” Head Coach Chris Schofield said. “They did a good job of taking away Brianna, but we got out-hustled all night long.”

Juarez scored 25 points in the two teams’ first meeting when the Bruins won by 24, but was limited to just five points in Friday’s matchup.

Not only did Siuslaw shut down Juarez, they were able to score 14 in the first quarter and 11 in the second to jump to an insurmountable 25-9 first half lead.

The third quarter was a replica of the second with the Bruins held to just 4 points, as they gave up 11 to the Vikings.

The fourth quarter saw the BHHS girls come alive as they outscored Siuslaw 10-8, but it wasn’t enough as the Vikings held on for the win.

Mallory McDonald led the Bruins with 8 points; Shawndee Hatcher and Alicia Goodwin both contributed 3, while Lakota Hatcher and Jordyn Keys put in 2 points each.

The JV girls squad claimed a 57-26 victory in the early game led by Josey Glazebrook, 11 points and Bethanee Bottoms, 9 points.

The Bruins’ varsity will have a full week off until they host South Umpqua at 6 p.m., Friday, at the CFCU Pavilion.
