Freshman Ashley Juarez scored nine of the Bruins 14 fourth quarter points as the Brookings-Harbor High School girls' basketball team made a run at the Etna Lions late in the game, but ran out of time and lost 32-25 in the first round of the Pacific Rim Tournament in Gold Beach.
After scoring only 11 points in the first three quarters combined, the Bruins used their full-court press to get steals and generate points as they outscored the Lions 14-12 in the final quarter.
The Bruins (1-4) played much more aggressive in the final eight minutes, playing with a sense of desperation that was lost in the opening three quarters.
"We were slow, tentative and sloppy with the ball in the first half," Coach Chris Schofield said. "In the fourth quarter, we came out and finally played with energy that we didn't have before."
In the first half, the Bruins struggled shooting the ball and went scoreless from the field, with all five of their first-half points coming on free throws.
A physical, aggressive Etna team gave the Bruins problems when trying to take the ball up the floor and when the Bruins tried to feed the ball to their posts.
"We didn't hardly make a pass without it being deflected," Schofield said.
But the Bruins proved they never give up as they pressed the action in the final two minutes of play, giving the Lions a scare down the stretch.
The Bruins were also playing without starters Jessie Goergen and Miriam Hernandez and lost Kara Miller in the third quarter after reaggravating a back injury and Chelsey Hannan fouled out in the fourth quarter.
Juarez led the Bruins with a game-high 14 points.
Taylor Keys chipped in four points while Lizeth Ochoa, Kristin Woodcock and Miller each added two points and Vanita Carrillo had one.
On Tuesday, the Bruins fell victim to a fourth quarter comeback to the Rogue River Chieftains in a 31-29 loss.
"We were up the entire game, we just made some mistakes coming down the stretch," Schofield said.
The Bruins held a 20-13 lead after three quarters of play, but got outscored 18-9 in the fourth quarter.
Miller and Juarez each scored nine points apiece while Chelsey Hannan added seven, Allison Larsson had two and Keys and Ochoa each had one.
In the second round of the Pacific Rim Tournament, the Bruins will play Illinois Valley at 9:30 a.m. today (Dec. 8) at Gold Beach High School.
