The Brookings-Harbor High School softball team used a six-run first inning to propel themselves to a 12-0 win over the Illinois Valley Cougars in just five innings.

Jessie Goergen pitched an excellent game for the Bruins (2-5), only giving up one hit, striking out four without walking a batter.

The Bruin defense also played extremely solidly behind Goergen and Brooke Blofsky did a good job behind the plate, as well.

In the first inning, Kara Miller and Lindsay Freeman got the Bruins started with back-to-back base hits.

Blofsky then laced a single down the middle, scoring Miller for the first run of the game.

Two batters later, Jamie Kay singled in Freeman and then stole second base, giving the Bruins runners on second and third.

Goergen then stepped up to the plate and knocked in Blofsky and Kay with a two-run single.

Jennifer Jones scored Goergen as she ripped a double to left, giving the Bruins a 5-0 lead.

With two outs, Amber Jordan singled in Jones to give the Bruins a six-run lead.

The Bruins notched two more runs in the second inning as Kay hit home Blofsky who reached base via a walk and then Goergen blasted a double down the third baseline to score Kay.

In the fourth inning, Blofsky started off the scoring as she hit in Freeman for the 9-0 lead.

After a walk by Kay, Goergen smashed a triple that went all the way to the wall and scored Blofsky and Kay for her fourth and fifth RBIs of the game.

The Bruins' final run of the game came on a wild pitch to pinch hitter Emily Fettig that scored Goergen from third base.

Goergen led the Bruins from the plate with a 3-for-3 performance with five RBIs.

Miller, Blofsky and Kay each registered two hits apiece, with Blofsky and Kay scoring three runs apiece.

The next game for the Bruins is a rematch against Gold Beach on Thursday, April 5, at home at 4:30 p.m.
