KAYAK EXCURSIONS OFFERED AT LAKE EARL

The North Coast Redwood Interpretive Association is offering a weekend of guided kayak excursions and paddling experiences on the cool waters of Lake Earl Coastal Lagoon near Crescent City.

On Saturday, July 28, Marna Powell, certified open water coastal kayak instructor and owner of Kayak Zak's, offers three, two-hour kayak safety instructional clinics.

Kayakers will learn an assortment of techniques to help them better navigate on lakes, rivers and open ocean.

The topics of the three clinics include: 1) balance, bracing and edging; 2) strokes and maneuvers; and 3) kayaking in the wind.

The instructional workshops are two hours each and are held at 8:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Each clinic builds upon the last and kayakers may attend one, two or all three.

There is a $30 fee for each clinic.

Kayaks and gear are not provided.

On Sunday, July 29, from 8 a.m. to noon, join wildlife biologist and ornithologist Terri Klemston for a guided exploration of the wetland edge and varied lagoon habitats.

Scout for some of the many migrating shorebirds, ducks, waterfowl and other species that rest and nest upon Lake Earl, the West Coast's largest coastal lagoon outside of Alaska.

Bring your own kayak or canoe or rent a sit-on-top kayak, wetsuit and all paddling gear from Kayak Zak's.

Beginners will receive an introductory kayaking lesson.

Space is limited. Call Sue Calla to register and for more information at (707) 465-6191.
