For senior Kyle Gordon, a two-day score of 154 over 36 holes was low enough to qualify for the OSAA 4A State Golf Championships at Emerald Valley golf course in Creswell on Monday and Tuesday.
“I tried to hit the fairway and the green and just putt,” Gordon said after the first day of play. “I made a couple of mistakes, but I bounced back with some birdies to shoot a 73 for the day.”
Par for the course was 72, and Gordon’s first day score was enough to put him in the lead headed into day two. The second day wasn’t quite as kind to Gordon as he shot an 81 for a two-day score of 154 to drop to second place overall behind Sutherlin’s Tyler Franke’s 151.
The Bruins took third at the district meet with a team total of 786, finishing behind first-place Sutherlin (720), and second-place Myrtle Point/Coquille (753).
According to Head Coach Chris McConnell, it was tough for the Bruins to finish and miss qualifying as a team for state but they are a young team and will have next year to exert their dominance.
The Bruins’ finishing scores were Gordon, 154; Blake Butler, 204; Caleb Hodge, 216; Rykken Nelson, 220; Alex McKee, 232.
The Bruins finished second in the Far West League behind Sutherlin.
