A stiff breeze blowing in off the ocean certainly didn’t help matters as the Brookings-Harbor High School girls soccer team claimed a 6-1 victory.
Brookings-Harbor High School junior Crystal Rodriguez (17) shoots on goal during the first half of Thursday’s 6-1 victory over Coquille.
With the wind in their faces the first half, the Lady Bruins allowed the Coquille Lady Red Devils a single goal in the half while going scoreless themselves.
The Bruins opened up the scoring floodgates six minutes into the second half when Jade Heredia hit the first of six goals the Bruins would score.
Just 12 minutes later Karlie Gonzales took a corner kick pass and put it in the back of the goal. Two minutes after that, Crystal Rodriguez hit Heredia with a pass that was headed into the net for goal number three.
The best possible goal of the afternoon came on a corner kick by Molly Joyce in the 67th minute. Joyce judged the wind correctly and kicked the ball with enough force that it bent through the air, around the near post and went in the net.
In the 69th minute Gonzales returned the favor and delivered an assist to Rodriguez for the fifth goal.
Not wanting to be outdone, the Red Devils scored the Bruins’ sixth and final goal for them in the 74th minute.
The Bruins advance to a 5-0-1 record in the Far West League and are ranked fifth in the state.
They travel to North Bend on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. contest.
