The Brookings-Harbor High School girls cross country team won the first place trophy at the Bandon Invitational on Tuesday. Junior Shaylin Curtis was the top placer for the Bruins, coming in at fifth place with a time of 22:33. Senior Jessica Fernandez and junior Brandi Rodgers followed shortly behind her in 10th and 11th place with times of 25:00 and 25:02, respectively. Mikaela Lea finished in 19th with a time of 27:25 while Mikaela George rounded out the team in 24th with a time of 28:19.
“The girls listened to their team captain and their coach and got off to a fast pace,” Head Coach Terry Axel said. “It was a pleasant surprise. We weren’t planning on coming back with a trophy.” The boys squad took third place out of 11 teams, even though they were missing three of their runners due to illness. Kyle Gordon led the boys in seventh place with a time of 18:58. “I like how Kyle ran his race,” Axel said. “He ran it really smart and improved his times over last year.” Nick Ensley finished in 20th with a time of 20: 56, While the Graham brothers, Sean and Shane finished in 35th and 41st with times of 21:43 and 22:14. Other runners for BHHS were Alec McBride, 23:21, Dylan Hiller, 23:24, Zak Anderberg, 24:43 and Zak Hanners, 27:24.
