The Brookings-Harbor High School girls soccer team jumped back into first place in the Far West League with a 4-0 victory over the Lady Trojans of Douglas High School on Monday.

The retaking of the spot may be short-lived though, depending on how the other games in the league shake out this week.

The Bruins have been in a back and forth struggle with league rival Sutherlin for the top spot and will have a chance to redeem last week’s 2-3 loss to the Bulldogs later in the month.

While the victory put them on top, neither the coach nor the players were pleased with how the team played in the foggy weather.

Freshman forward Addi Fitzgerald was disappointed with the quality of play exhibited by she and her teammates.

“We didn’t play our best,” she said.

“We’ll take a win any way we can get it,” Head Coach Fred Juarez said. “We’ve got a lot to work on and there are still a lot of games to go this year.”

Four separate Lady Bruins scored for the team.

Hannah Goergen took a shot on goal in the 11th minute that was blocked by the Douglas goalie. Jamie Macken’s quick reaction to the block allowed her to kick the rebound into the opposite corner from the goalkeeper and get the Bruins on the path to victory.

“I’m glad we showed them who’s boss,” Macken said. “It felt good to be the one to get it all started.”

While the foul weather conditions made it difficult to see the opposite end of the pitch, that didn’t stop goalie Jessica Yock from connecting with Hannah Baron for an assist on her goal.

Yock came charging out of the goal box to scoop up a hard-shot ball and boot it down the field. Baron took the pass and, after breaking down two defenders, kicked a hard shot just past a defender and the goalie’s outstretched hands to score the Bruins’ second goal.

Brookings-Harbor’s third goal came on a cross from Bethanee Bottoms to Goergen, who put it in for a score.

“We couldn’t have planned it any better,” Goergen said. “Bethanee’s cross was perfect.”

The Bruins’ fourth and final goal of the game came after the ball had bounced around the penalty box for a short amount of time before Jessica Fernandez was able to gather it in and put a hard shot past the goalie.

The Lady Bruins travel to North Bend to take on the third-place Lady Bulldogs today (Oct. 12). The game is scheduled for 4:30.
