The Brookings-Harbor High School fall sport athletes will have their summer breaks come to a close sooner than other high school students as the first date students are allowed to officially practice draws nigh. Monday, Aug. 22, marks the first day that coaches can hold formal practices for the fall sports teams, and the coaches have plans to start the season with a bang. The boys soccer program, coached by Pancho Garcia will have practices at 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, beginning Aug. 22. Practice will be held at the high school soccer field. The girls soccer program will begin holding formal practices from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 22. According to girls Head Coach Fred Juarez there have been between 10 and 30 athletes coming out for informal practices during the summer months and the girls program should have enough athletes for both a varsity and a JV program. The BHHS volleyball program will begin their first week of practice with a volleyball camp in the mornings and then a second formal practice in the evenings. Morning practices will run from 7:30 to 9 a.m., with the camp following at 9:30 a.m. The afternoon practice will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Members of the BHHS cross country team recently returned from a high altitude running camp in the Sierra Nevada mountains and will hold their formal practices in the afternoons after the Aug. 22 start date. The football program will hold a speed week camp beginning Monday at 5 p.m. to work on conditioning and then formal practice will begin on Aug. 22. All students that plan on playing a fall sport need to have a completed Student Athlete Physical form submitted to the athletic offices before practices begin. Athletes will also need to have paid their fees or made arrangements with Tina Peters in the athletic office before they will be allowed to practice. The phone number for the high school is 541-469-2108.
