Dexter Vaughn’s 26-points leads Bruins to win

There’s an old cliche in basketball that reads: You live by the three, you die by the three. In this past Saturday’s play-in game at Junction City high school, Brookings-Harbor forward Dexter Vaughn lived by the three, and he lived well.

Vaughn hit a career-high eight 3-pointers and scored a season-high 26-points to lead the Bruins over the Junction City Tigers, 72-62.

“Derek normally doesn’t get open looks like that,” said BHHS head coach Buell Gonzalez. “It’s nice when your big players show up in big games.”

Vaughn outdueled Junction City’s talented senior guard Joe Van Ras, who scored a game high 32-vpoints, including 22 in a furiously paced second-half that saw the Pirates frantically attempting to climb back into a game and prevent their season from ending.

BHHS jumped out to an early lead and played with the focus and intensity that playoff games require. Vaughn opened the scoring for BHHS by hitting two 3-pointers within the first minute-and-a-half of the game. After Bruin guard Justin Murray drove to the hoop for a layup, the Bruins found themselves with an early 6-point cushion. Junction City would battle back to keep the game close until the Bruins went on a 9-to-3 run late in the first quarter to preserve an 18-12 lead.
