La Flor's Mike Runge belts a drive to left field during Thursday evening's recreation softball league play.
With a little more than two weeks left in the season, teams from Dairy Queen and New Hope Plumbing picked up big wins in Thursday’s Brookings-Harbor Recreation Softball League action.
Dairy Queen 14, KMJ 11
The team from Dairy Queen was able to stave off a late rally by team KMJ to secure a 14-11 win in Thursday’s early game.
“It was kind of a loose game,” said DQ winning pitcher Adam Taylor, who returned after a month and a half hiatus. “I wouldn’t say it was our best but we came around and put it together in the end.”
Taylor and his defense were able to hold KMJ to just three runs through four innings, but KMJ bats came alive to cut into the deficit.
DQ was able to get out of a sixth inning jam to end the game, thanks in large part to Taylor’s pitching and the DQ defense.
“I want to give (the opposing team) a chance to hit it and see what my defense can do,” said Taylor about his pitch-to-contact style. “For a rec league, we have a great team. Defensively and offensively we have an excellent group. Most of these guys have been playing together for many years. When you have good relationships with each other, everything really gels.”
DQ is now 20-3 on the season and is chasing Team 101 for top spot in the league with just six games remaining.
New Hope 10, La Flor 8
New Hope Plumbing had to rally to earn a come-from-behind win over La Flor.
Down by several runs early, New Hope rallied to take a slim two-run lead heading into the final inning.
New Hope pitcher Wayne Sheffel and his defense were able to get out of a bases loaded jam with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to win a close ballgame.
“The win was great and it was fun,” said Sheffel about the victory. “That’s what everybody is out here to do is have fun.”
With the win, New Hope is now 8-8 on the season. La Flor is still looking for their first win on the year, but according to Sheffel, the records mean very little.
“For some reason, these two teams have bonded, which is nice,” he said.
