Bruin football team hopefuls will spend this week awakening muscles that may have been dormant since the team attended the Gold Beach Football camp, by participating in Speed Week.

Speed Week is a one- to two-hour session each evening where players lift weights, work on their overall speed and brush up on football skills that may have gotten a little rusty in the offseason.

Led by coaching staff from the Brookings-Harbor High School and Azalea Middle School football programs, the sessions are intense, but designed to get players ready for daily doubles which will begin Aug. 22.

Speed Week culminates in a team building exercise called The Catalyst.

“It’s exciting,” JV coach Ted Burdett said of the final event. “I’ve already had kids asking if we were going to do it this year because they had such a great time last year.”

Speed week not only allows players to brush up on skills they may have forgotten, but it also allows team leaders to get started early in forming a team bond.

“There are way more people this year than I thought there would be,” senior running back Jacob McKinney said. “We’re working hard and making sure everyone is having fun. It’s going good.”

Quarterback Jr. Helme agreed. “We’re working with everyone,” he said.

“Especially the quarterbacks,” he added with a laugh.

According to head coach Joe Morin, Speed Week is a start, and things are looking good.
