The Brookings-Harbor High School track and field team competed in the Central Coast Invitational track meet at Siuslaw High School last Friday, facing several 4A, 5A and 6A schools.
The meet featured some of the best 4A competition in the state, with teams such as North Bend, Philomath and Taft represented well. In addition to the 4A talent, the Bruins faced athletes from 5A Dallas and 6A Roseburg.
Seeking to improve on their times as they turn the halfway point of the season, several Bruin and Lady Bruin athletes continued to impress. Hurdler Shaine Graham and sprinter Sophie Landau continue to dominate their events.
Graham won both the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles, bringing his season total to 10 first-place finishes in a combined 12 races this year.
Landau won her second 400-meter race this year by posting a personal best 1:00.35, beating second place Carleen Fall of Dallas by nearly two full seconds. She also finished second place in the girls 800-meters.
Bruin sprinter David Joyce also continued to have a solid season, finishing second in both the 100-meter and 200-meter races. His 23.04 time in the 200-meters is a personal best.
The Brookings-Harbor 4x400-meter relay teams swept both the boys’ and girls’ races.
Gabe Brazelton, Trent Bevan, Cody Enos and Graham ran a combined 3:37.64 to beat Roseburg by a mere 0.15 seconds. The girls’ squad, featuring Colby Welch, Jade Heredia, Jordyn Keys and Landau, ran the relay in 4:19.79, beating second place North Bend by nearly four and a half seconds.
