The Brookings-Harbor High School bowling team was disappointed following a third-place finish at the district tournament in Grants Pass Feb. 5.
They were disappointed until they found out that a change in qualifying rules allowed the top three teams from each district to advance to the state championships.
“It’s an amazing thing,” Head Coach Randy Scruggs said. “Two years in a row that we’ve qualified for state. It’s really amazing.”
The varsity boys team was also honored with the Best Team Sportsmanship Award for the fifth straight year.
The boys JV squad took second in the JV tournament, and Steven Morris – a JV bowler who was moved to varsity little less than a month ago – finished first in the JV All-Star points’ rankings.
The girls team placed fourth, just outside state qualification status.
The bowling team is fundraising to help pay for their trip to the state tournament taking place Feb. 24 to 26.
The team will sell coupon books for local businesses with savings totalling $75. The cost is $10.
