The Brookings-Harbor High School boys and girls basketball teams will be fighting against cancer Friday night when they take the floor for their league basketball games against the Siuslaw Vikings.
The teams will adorn purple warm-up shirts for their pre-game warmups and will be donating half of the gate receipts from the night to the American Cancer Society.
The players will be honoring the survivors in their lives at 6 p.m., prior to the start of the Lady Bruins’ game.
The ceremony will include having survivors escorted by players to center court to be recognized by the crowd, as well as a Luminaria ceremony.
The teams will host a silent auction with items donated from local businesses such as Les Schwab, Gold Beach Lumber, Beachcombers and an eight-crab dinner with the crab donated by commercial fisherman Lonnie Marrington and the side dishes provided by Cindy Schofield and Alice Farmer.
The team has asked that all attendees to the game Friday wear purple in support of the fight against cancer. They will be selling T-shirts for $20 each and all proceeds from the shirts will be donated by Ali’s Graphics to the American Cancer Society. The organizers are asking that anyone interested in purchasing a shirt call 541-661-2570 to preorder as the shirts sold out during the 2010 fundraiser.
The teams raised over $1,200 last year and hope to raise more than that this year.
The night’s activities are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. with the girls game beginning at 6:30 p.m. and the boys game scheduled to begin around 8 p.m.
